UNIMED, Mediterranean Universities Union, founded in October 1991, is an association of 90 Universities from 22 countries of both shores of the Mediterranean (www.uni-med.net).UNIMED’s aim is to develop university research and education in the Euro-Mediterranean area in order to contribute to scientific, cultural, social and economic cooperation. UNIMED carries out the following activities to promote the international dimension of its associated Universities: promotion of the international dimension of universities; academic support for the establishment of new universities and faculties; planning and fund-raising activities: information on call for proposals and opportunities offered by international and European Commission, partnership search, technical assistance, planning; dissemination; promotion of mobility in the Euro-Mediterranean region, for students, researchers and academic staff; technical assistance for the enhancement of quality assurance in university education; creation of thematic Sub-Networks to foster the scientific cooperation within specific fields; organization of meetings, discussions, seminars and round tables both at a national and international level; training for academic and administrative staff of Universities, particularly for the personnel of International Relations Offices. Through the many initiatives carried out over the two decades, UNIMED has promoted the collaboration between universities of the Mediterranean, becoming a point of reference of the international university cooperation. UNIMED has a track record in EU project participation and management and, particularly, in the development of scientific and educational cooperation in the Euro-Mediterranean region.

Raniero Chelli. Active since 1985 in European projects (mainly in RTD, training and international cooperation), as a Commission Official (ESPRIT Programme 85-88), Project Manager, Project Design specialist, Evaluator and reviewer, Quality assurance manager, National Delegate in IST management Committees and trainer on EU programmes and funding. He is currently a senior consultant at UNIMED to identify appropriate calls for proposals, cooperating in setting up successful proposals and consortia, and where applicable, supporting the management of selected projects. Over the years he has managed more than 10 significant projects funded by the European Commission through R&D Framework Programmes, TEMPUS and Euromed.
Marco Di Donato. PhD researcher at the University of Studies of Genova (Italy) in Political Thinking and Political Communication at the Faculty of Political Sciences, Marco Di Donato holds a Master Degree cum laude in Arabic language and Islamic Studies at the L'Orientale University of Naples (Italy). He focuses his research on the Islamist movement in Middle East area. Holder of a publication in 2010 edited by UTET of a miscellaneous book with an essay about Hamas, entitled "Hamas: Terroristic organization or real political alternative", and author of another miscellaneous book for the Italian publisher Il Mulino about the Sunni community in Lebanon, his upcoming publication is a monograph on “Hezbollah, the Lebanese Resistance Movement” edited by Mimesis. Proficient in Arabic and English languages, he is professor of “Islamic Thinking” and “History of Islamic countries” courses at the University of Trento. Since 2014, he is part of the UNIMED Research Unit.
